(Rapidan, VA) - It was an early morning out of Midlo for the 8 am start at the Dirty Kitten Gravel Race at Locust Hill Farm. Party Poobahs Laine, Flynn, and Parsons met up with Party Preacher Kendrick to contest the "Full Purrito" 60-mile distance.
The heat was hot and the dust was dusty. The pebbly corners were loose as marbles or deep as quicksand. There was walking. There was a cow stampede. There was a hilltop aid station with bacon for strength.
Laine and Kendrick went off with the olds while Parsons and Flynn started with the open group. Flynn started out strong with the hole shot and on the first two laps but then quickly crumped. Once again, Parsons came to the rescue to pull him around for the last 20 miles.
Parsons nabbed 14th of 79 in the open and Flynn finished 15th. Laine finished the beer. Kendrick finished somewhere in between in a place known as self-flagellation, and with a colorful third-person accounting of his performance for the day.
"These kittens done us dirty," said Parsons.
"Do I need stitches?" pondered Flynn.
"Is there anymore beer?" queried Laine.
As this fumbling foursome from the Party Pace program piloted away from this dirty day, all realized the appeal of Sunday's 20- and 40-mile distance events. Vive la Kitty!
